Spring has Sprung

It was a nice, warm weekend, up in the 60s if not the 70s. It was even sunny most of the time, although as alleged storm fronts started moving in today it got rather dark. We never did get that rain, though.

I did go out biking a few times, which was nice. The wind was against me yesterday, which made it a really good workout. Today it was with me as I flew down the John Nolen causeway, which was fun (it always is). I also walked around a little bit, but mostly I stayed home because I had things to do.

One of those things is my taxes, which I hope to finish in the next week. Actually, my taxes are pretty easy, but I do them very carefully to make sure I don't make a dumb mistake. It looks like I'm going to owe a little money to both the feds and the state. Ah, well.

Another things is writing software for my fantasy baseball league, which I got a decent start on today. I'm writing it in perl, which is just similar enough to M (which I program in at work) to make me get confused about the best approach to take. Plus it's been a couple of years since I last wrote a perl program. But I ought to be able to get it done. I've figured most of it out, and I've successfully connected to STATS, Inc. so I know I can get the raw data when the time comes.

A third thing was catching up on Babylon 5 tapes. It's always good to remember that if I have 4 tapes to watch, then that's nearly 4 hours out of my weekend! But I've been busy during the week a lot, which cuts down on flexibility for doing so.

I did a little maintenance of my Web page. My Games page is getting a lot of hits, for some reason. I even occasionally get comments on it. I added some new games reviews to it, mainly of various Cheapass Games.

It seems like a lot of the Web page feedback I'm getting lately has been people asking me if I can suggest resources they can use for their term papers (mainly because they stumbled over something in my book reviews, or if I know where they can find such-and-such a game, or if I want to buy some comics they have for sale, or if I could let them know how much their comics are worth. I'm not sure what makes them think I'm qualified to do all of this; maybe it's just that I can string sentences together in a literate manner.

It's particularly dismaying the high school or college kids asking me where they can find information on (say) Nazi Germany. I sometimes write back and suggest their school library. Certainly they're going to find a lot more information there than on the Web - and better-organized and more reliable information, too. (Can you imagine one of these kids writing a paper using information from some Neo-Nazi Web site? I'm sure it's happened already.)

So next weekend is our fantasy baseball draft, and possibly some gaming besides. And then the following weekend is Minicon 33. Boy, a lot of busy times coming up!

Despite involving a lot of downtime, though, this weekend feels a little empty, now, here at the end of it.
