Long-Overdue Cleaning
My floor has been so dusty the last few weeks that it's been almost embarrassing - or would be if I ever had any visitors! Actually, I do expect to have visitors over the next week, so today I pulled out the stops (and the vacuum) and cleaned house.
Other than vacuuming and doing dishes, I went through piles of paper that have been accumulating on my desk, my dining table, and my bookshelves. Boy, what a lot of junk! I filed away a lot of this stuff in my filing cabinets, went through the magazines and newspapers and cut out what I wanted and put the rest in the recycle bins, and tossed an awful lot of paper. Even found some bills I needed to pay, and the invitation to my 10 year high school reunion (which is in November) which I need to register for!
Actually, my apartment is not that messy; I hardly have anything lying on the floor (other than cat toys), my bookshelves are neatly organized (read: anally alphabetized), and I generally know where everything is. I've just been especially lazy about keeping tidy over the last couple of months, and things built up.
I still need to tackle the bathroom, and mop my linoleum floor, but I'll do that some evening this week. Meanwhile, Jefferson, one of my cats, has had trouble hitting the litter box lately - he's off by about two feet. Yuck. I'm not sure what's up with him, or what to do about it. I should ask the vet, I guess. He's always been a little less clueless about these things than Newton, for whatever reason.
I also noticed in the paper today that Sonia Dada is coming to town in mid-October (a couple of weeks after The Freddy Jones Band, for whom I already have tickets). I've seen them twice before, and they're excellent both in concert and on disc. They're an eight-piece band: Three vocalists who used to be a black street gospel trio, two guitarists, a keyboardist, bassist and drummer, and they play this great assortment of music which mixes rock and gospel harmonies. I hope this concert is a sign that their new album is due out soon!
Tonight I finished reading Fantagraphics Books' latest collection of the Pogo comic strip - they're reprinting all the dailies chronologically - and kept working on Brin's The Postman, which is very good so far.
