1990, McAlister Auditorium, New Orleans, LA

I should mention, first, that I did not have great seats for this concert, and the acoustics in McAlister are not the best. That said, this was a disappointing concert. Part of this is because the album they'd just released, Nomads Indians Saints, was not one of their best efforts. But another reason, I think, is that in concert they mostly just went with their voices and their guitars, whereas their studio music was tending towards fuller arrangements. As a result, the sound seemed very sparse to me, without the complexities of melody that I'd expected.

The opening act was The Ellen James Society, who had contributed to the song "1 2 3" on Nomads Indians Saints. A woman-fronted, guitar-driven group, they relied on making a wall of sound, and were a bit short on melody. I don't think they've really done anything since their first album.
