I saw The Freddy Jones Band in concert shortly after the release of their Lucid album. A very nondescript band named Left Undone opened for them, playing some sort of blues-rock. (I quipped that maybe they were better left undone.)

Two things hampered my enjoyment of the show: First, the mix didn't seem right, and many of the early songs felt rather muddy, including my favorites such as "Take The Time". Even by the time they got to what I felt should be their show-stopper, "Waitress", it still didn't seem quite right. The other element was the excessive use of the stage lights, which would often range out into the audience, almost blinding me! However, I suspect that these were used because the band is basically not very expressive on stage; mostly, they stand there and play, as opposed to, say, Sonia Dada, who are a very visual group on stage. (Of course, Sonia Dada has the luxury of having three vocalists who don't play instruments!)

The later part of the concert helped make up for much, though. "In A Daydream" turned out to be their true show-stopper, and sounded beautiful. And after a tedious rendition of "Dixie Dynamite" (one of those songs I just don't see the point of), they did a very nice version of "Ferris Wheel". The material from the new album was not very inspiring, and I recall that the best song, "Waiting On The Stone", was absent.

Overall, not a poorly-spent evening, but I'd been expecting more.
