Gazing into the Abyss: Michael Rawdon's Journal

Fisherman's Wharf

Today I went up to the city to meet Debbi, who volunteers her time up there once a month. My goal (other than meeting her) was to buy chocolate for various folks relating to my upcoming vacation. We also ended up walking around quite a bit.

I drove up to Daly City and took BART the rest of the way. This had the advantage of getting me free parking. Why didn't I go from Fremont as I usually do? Mainly because I had to go to Menlo Park afterwards for the Keplers book discussion of The Red Magician afterwards, and since Deb would be giving me a lift to my car, Daly City was the more convenient end point.

Anyway, BART took me to within a mile or so of where Debbi was, and I could have taken MUNI rail the rest of the way, but I decided to walk it. It turned out to be a slightly longer walk than I'd have preferred, but - live and learn! I met up with her and we sat and watched the sea lions (dozens and dozens of sea lions) off of Fisherman's Wharf for a while before setting off.

I'd never really walked through the heart of the tourist trap that is Fisherman's Wharf. There's some interesting stuff there, though most of it is just expensive junk and huge crowds. But we had a good time, I bought the chocolate I wanted, and we got sundaes at Ghirardelli Square. (The guys making the desserts apparently completely lost our order, and I had to go up and prod them to make it. But they were really nice about it.) Afterwards we walked around the pier sticking out from near the Maritime Museum, and watched a really big barge pass in front of Alcatraz, which itself had been partly shrouded in fog all afternoon - a rather cool effect, a narrow band of fog passing over the island while everything else around was sunny.

And we held hands the whole way. Swoon, swoon.

Debbi dropped me off at my car without incident, and we made plans to see each other once more before I leave. Another nice day, all told!
