Gazing into the Abyss: Michael Rawdon's Journal

Quiet Time

It's been a quiet couple of days. Subrata came over for a while yesterday and we reprised our lazy afternoon of a couple of weeks ago, watching football, reading (comic books, for him; he's drilling through my collection of Prince Valiant volumes), and chatting about football, work, the election, and whatever else. The cats spent the afternoon being extremely cute, and even going up and sniffing Subrata a few times. (Subrata also expressed surprise that I was burning incense, which I do from time to time. He says it reminds him of his home growing up, which I guess makes sense. I like burning nice-smelling things, although lately I feel like I prefer scented candles.)

I finished reading Dorothy Sayers' The Nine Tailors yesterday morning, which I enjoyed but was not bowled over by. I also skimmed through Gaudy Night, which I've read before, and cemented my opinion that it's the weakest book of the series. I just don't find Harriet Vane a very interesting character. What do you think?

At any rate, I have only one more book to go in the series, plus some short stories, and the unfinished novel which was recently finished by a modern author. It's been a fun trip. I've been building a chronology of the stories on my Sayers page, for those who are interested in reading her. I do strongly suggest starting from the beginning.

By the way, a rare forum thread not started by me appeared recently.

I'm still feeling under-the-weather today. I think I didn't get enough sleep over the weekend, staying up too late, and I've been unable to sleep past about 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning for the last several months. Guess my body's just on a schedule. Nonetheless I decided to try working out this morning, and it went pretty well. I was taking it a bit easier, and I chugged plenty of water, but the cardio workout was easier than usual for no discernable reason.

I have, incidentally, hit a new low in my weight, and I've more-or-less lost 15 pounds from my high of about a year and a half ago. Not bad!

Work was busy but not terribly eventful, otherwise: I did an interview, attended the feedback session, and went to my weekly team meeting, and that mostly took care of my afternoon. Tomorrow I hope to get much programming done.

Meanwhile, the holidays are creeping up on us, I've been updating my Amazon About You Area, random keys on my Mac keyboard stop working at odd times and have to be coerced into submission, I need to buy some new blue jeans, I ought to get the ball rolling on looking for a house, I need to take my car in for its regular check-up, I need to buy plane tickets for Christmas, etc. etc. No shortage of stuff to keep me busy!

Boy, this was a nothing of an entry, wasn't it? I don't even have a string of crushes to talk about like Mo does. And even if I did I probably wouldn't talk about them here. I'm so boring. Or such a weenie. Or something.
