Welcome Back, Now Unpack
If there's one thing I can't stand, it's living in a space where half the stuff is in boxes.
I went back to work this morning after my vacation, which meant unpacking my office. (Entries from my vacation will be filled in over the next few days. Keep an eye out, or join the notify list.) You see, the great department reorg occurred while I was on vacation, and I now have a genuine office, not a cubicle, which is nice. The office feels a little small, but I'm sure it will work out. (It'd be nice to have a window, too, but I can't have everything - yet.)
Whenever I move somewhere, I always unpack really quickly. I unpacked everything quickly when I moved to my apartment here in California; except for two boxes, I unpacked everything within a couple of weeks. (Those boxes remained unpacked for nearly a year due to not owning enough bookcases to put the stuff in them, and not having enough bookcases because I was under the delusion that I'd be moving soon.)
So I set up my computers, spent a long time hunting around for a long enough ethernet cable for one of them, and unpacked all my books and put them on the shelf, and put up my posters, and was done by mid-afternoon. Okay, so I didn't read my e-mail until mid-afternoon. That's life.
If there's one thing I'm good at, it's being organized.
It was kind of nice to be back, though it will take a while to get used to where everyone's offices are now. I kind of feel like our team is living at the fringe of things, whereas previously we were in the thick of everything. That will take some getting used to. Most of my friends on the floor are now in other hallways. Rounding up people for lunch will take a little more work.
Otherwise, I haven't yet gotten into the thick of things yet. And I won't tomorrow, either, since I've been tapped to staff WebObjects' booth at JavaOne for most of the day.
By the way, Apple has recently added laser vision surgery (e.g., LASIK) to our health care plan. I understand this is really rare, for a health plan to cover it, so I'm thinking maybe I should take advantage of it. Should I? It's still pretty expensive (well over $3000, total), but I'm still relatively young and age-related eye problems have not yet set in, so maybe I should enjoy it while I can?
If you have an opinion or some experience with laser eye surgery, feel free to comment in my forum.
