A Less Successful Day
Yesterday I felt the need to listen to some old, cheesy pop music, and there's not much cheesier than former Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw. (Well, okay, former Styx keyboardist Dennis de Young is cheesier. Way cheesier.) I brought his three solo albums into work: Girls with Guns, What If and Ambition. Actually, Shaw does have an ear for a hook, and his voice is pretty good. But lightweight pop songs are pretty much what he does. His peak as a solo artist was probably "Little Girl World" from Girls with Guns.
However, it was "Ever Since the World Began" from Ambition which actually interested me in becoming a 'serious fan' of rock music, which ended up getting me into Styx, and then the Who, and elsewhere from there. It's a well-crafted song, which is what's most admirable in the best of this kind of music.
I see Shaw has a new album out on Amazon: 7 Deadly Zens. Hmm. (And boy, if you want to read some naive music reviews, check out the customer comments on that album...)
I did, however, run a variety of other errands: Looked for pillows (I could use some more, especially with Matt coming to visit), bought a bath mat for my second bathroom, bought some china markers to use on the rail games (the green crayon took a beating from Subrata's tough fingers, though of course green was the one color of marker I didn't find), and hit the store to stock up my new fridge.
I also heard an interesting piece on NPR of a new band called Bottomland who produced and are distributing their album themselves. The clips I heard sounded quite interesting - atmospheric jazz/rock, a little reminiscent of Sonia Dada - so I'm thinking I should order a copy.
When I got home, I found that my bad cats had managed to get into a cupboard, pull out an unopened thing of treats, and scarf the whole thing down. Bad cats! They got less dinner tonight, let me tell you.
