Yesterday was (as they say) Turkey Day. Dad called me around 10:30 am - which is 11:30 his time. I was still in bed, and if I was actually awake it was only on a technicality; I actually think maybe he called me at 10, not 10:30, but I wasn't conscious enough to pay attention.

Usually when the phone rings and I'm still in bed and not ready to get up I let the machine get it. (Yes, I'm a hypocrite. I hate leaving messages on other peoples' machines. On the other hand, everyone seemed to think I was weird when I didn't have a machine, so I don't feel too guilty about it.) But some piece of my brain seemed to think I was awake enough to answer the phone on this morning, so I did. I'm pretty sure that piece was still asleep.

Anyway, once I became conscious enough to talk and have a memory more than 2 seconds long, it was a pretty good conversation, and I did get out of bed afterwards. It was weird there for a little while.

A little later I called my Mom, too, and we had a nice chat.

In-between I got to feed my cats the antibiotics they're taking for a week in the wake of having their teeth yanked. Jefferson hates this stuff. It makes him foam and drool at the mouth, which the vet warned me might happen. It's really very disgusting, and he always runs off and drools on my bed, or my couch, or whatever, as punishment for making him take the stuff, I guess. Newton isn't drooly about it; he doesn't like it, but he can take it all in one shot. I usually have to let Jefferson go clean himself once or twice before he takes the whole mL.

Yick.

The cats seem to be in good spirits after their ordeal, though, and their breath is a lot less offensive. I have got to start brushing their teeth regularly.

In the afternoon I went over to John's mother's house where he was cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I sat around and watched him cook (and occasionally helped, when asked to lend a hand) and watched the Thanksgiving day football games. The Steelers/Lions game was marred by some truly awful refereeing, including the ref misunderstanding the call on a coin toss! The Lions deserved to win, as they did out-play the Steelers by a small margin, and win they did, but it was ugly, because of the awful ref-ing.

Later on the Vikings stomped all over the Cowboys in a rather nondescript slugfest. I learned later that my alma mater, Tulane University, finished the college football season undefeated by trouncing their opponent Louisiana Tech 63-30. I think that giving up 63 points to your opponent at any level is pretty embarrassing in football, and I'm sure Tech feels that way.

Tulane's football program has been awful for as long as I've known Tulane existed. When I was there, it was just an excuse to go to the Superdome without having to pay NFL ticket prices. Apparently they really turned things around this year, and I believe are currently ranked #11 nationally, which is really quite impressive for a program with Tulane's mediocre background. Hey, if I were still in New Orleans I might have even gone to a game!

Anyway, dinner at John's was yummy. John and I agreed that the gravy turned out especially well, and the garlic potatoes were delicious with the gravy. Although I was pretty much stuffed after one plate of food, I did have second and third helpings of potatoes. John said the turkey wasn't so good this year, but it tasted okay to me. Then again, apparently the dark meat (which I had and prefer) was better than the white meat.

I was pretty tired yesterday for some reason, and after dinner we turned into slugs and watched most of The Empire Strikes Back (my favorite of the Star Wars trilogy) and part of Return of the Jedi. Of course, since this was on The Sci-Fi Channel, the program-to-commercial ratio was roughly 1:1. You'd think that after seeing the house commercial for Barb Wire five times I'd have a pretty good idea whether I want to watch their TV airing of it (I don't).

Tonight I headed downtown to go to the coffee shop to read for a while. I got there at around 8:00 sharp -- and found that they were closed! What the hey?

So I came home and ordered myself a pizza, and killed some time reading until this week's Homicide episode came on. Only -- it didn't come on. Dateline came on instead. Que?

Anyway, I instead sat down and watched the last few daily re-runs of Homicide, and found that they've jumped back to the episodes they skipped over a few days ago. Included in this batch were two really excellent season three episodes, in which three of the detectives are seriously wounded while making a routine arrest. It's pretty tense stuff, including a terrific manhunt to the tune of Peter Gabriel's "No Self Control". I saw the "punchline" of part two from almost the beginning of part one, but that didn't make it any less cool. It's nice to see that all of these characters have flaws, but that they are also each strong enough to support each other at certain times, and that the responsible ones are professional enough not to storm off in anger when confronted with something they don't like.

Part three of this story is airing later tonight, so I'll watch it tomorrow.
