Bike Mayhem
Not a whole lot to write about in the latter half of the week.
Last night we had our monthly book discussion, about Vonda McIntyre's The Moon and the Sun. The other folks thought less of the book than I did, a common sentiment expressed being "I didn't see what was so special about this book that it won the Nebula Award." I liked it a bit more than they, but it didn't really stand out in my mind either. (It's not going on my list of favorite SF novels, for instance.)
They also had trouble with the various names of the characters, felt some of the characters behaved in very inconsistent manners, and generally felt that the first half of the book was very slow going and needed more editing.
Afterwards we had a rather lengthy discussion about computers (particularly the iMac) and the Internet, which was far more lively than the discussion of the book!
I've been having trouble with my bike recently: As I pedal, it feels like there's some unusual slack in the chain as I push down with each foot - it's very slight, but perceptible. And then on the ride home today the chain slipped off the front gears as I shifted from low to high going down a hill. (My hands got quite greasy getting it back on; ick!) The rear flywheel and gears were installed last summer, and the chain was put on just this past spring, so I wonder if either the front gears or the shifter need replacing or fixing. How annoying.
Of course, my bike only cost me $230 when I bought it seven years ago (this is the biking equivalent of buying a $3000 car), so maybe I should just consider investing in a better bicycle. I don't need anything fancy, but maybe just the 7-year technology upgrade would be an improvement. (I'm impressed by how light some of these newer bikes are!)
For instance, I'm reading the first two novels in Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan series as my next SF foray. After some of the novels I've read lately, I'm in the mood for something a little lighter.
