Happy Fireworks Day!

Slept late today. Didn't jump in the shower until about 12:30. Must do better tomorrow since I'm meeting Karen at noon to go to Summerfest.

This afternoon was an errand and project one. The main project was to sweep and mop my linoleum floor. I'm trying to get things in shape to host the SF book discussion on Thursday. That went pretty well. I got some smaller stuff done while waiting for the floor to dry - like keeping up with my credit card records.

The main errand was to go to a terrific shoe store about half an hour's drive from here to look for sandals. (By the way, it takes about ten minutes to reach the edge of Madison from my apartment, so this place is well out-of-town.) The store may be terrific for shoes, but it was pretty lame for sandals: Only two kinds, really, and half of them were Birkenstocks, which I've already decided I don't care for. I want to get sandals with comfortable padding, mainly due to the soreness I sometimes get in my feet. Good padding does alleviate the problem (which is not chronic, but is annoying), as I discovered when last I bought new sneakers.

Anyway, no soap there. Bummer.

On the way back I stopped and picked up (you guessed it) more jazz albums. Actually I picked up The Return of the Brecker Bros, which I'm listening to right now (and is terrific, so far) and Michael Brecker's Two Blocks from the Edge, which my friend John is high on, mainly due to the pianist. These were both used, so I felt I could afford it.

(There's also a very expensive Miles Davis boxed set with all his recordings from 1965-68 - meaning about six albums and other material. This was also at the used store, for $55.00 rather than the list of $90.00. But I decided that it will be a while before I feel like I can justify buying that one.)

Incidentally, of the other albums I bought yesterday, the Oscar Peterson one is pretty cool, albeit a little more sparsely arranged than I'd hoped, while the Herbie Hancock one is a little too off-beat and I think will take more concentrated listening to get into. I guess I'd say that Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is my favorite of the ones I've picked up so far.

The weather was beautiful for all that driving around, though, and also for what I spent the latter half of the day doing...

Around 4:30 I went over to the Independence Day party that a local fannish couple throws every year. It's always pretty mellow and fun, and is capped off with going over to the fireworks display in Shorewood Hills (an incorporated town right next to Madison). Good fireworks this year.

It was actually at this party two years ago that I first met many of the local fan group - having gotten into it through Tracy and WisCon - and at that party that I developed a huge crush on the woman I've alluded to at times in this journal (though not, I think, ever by name; gee, wonder why?). That made the whole experience a rather bittersweet one. This one was more firmly positive, as those roller-coaster elements largely don't apply anymore.

I was there for about seven hours - longer than I'd expected I'd have endurance for! - and now it's late and I should head off to bed.
