I started reading science fiction "seriously" (i.e., more than the odd book here or there) in late high school - later than most SF fans begin, I think. I started by discovering H. Beam Piper and his future history, which held me spellbound for most of a summer, and I started branching out from there. I read much of Arthur C. Clarke's output, quite a bit of Michael Moorcock, George R. R. Martin, and others.
After a period of spotty reading during grad school, I started reading again in earnest in the mid-1990s. Although I read a little fantasy (J. R. R. Tolkein, Tim Powers), I mostly stick to science fiction, with a mild preference for the "hard" variety. I mainly read recent SF, and as of mid-2001 my favorites include Vernor Vinge, Ken MacLeod, George R. R. Martin, Lois McMaster Bujold, Alastair Reynolds, Charles Stross and Sean McMullen.
Here's a list of my favorite SF books.
