Gazing into the Abyss: Michael Rawdon's Journal

Thud.

Sometimes it doesn't take long for a day to turn around.

I had a pretty good day at work, actually. Worked out, got stuff accomplished at my desk. Cleared up an outstanding issue with my Credit Union. Also, while Tom and Ben and I were at coffee, I noticed a slip of paper in a badge holder on the table we were sitting at. I picked it up, looked at it, and said, "Hey, I know that name!" It belongs to a cow-orker of Trish's, whom I met several months ago. So I took it up to her, and she said, "So that's where that got to!" and seemed quite grateful.

I shoulda stayed at the office, though, since things turned around when I left.

Subrata and I had plans to meet at my place to watch the Vikings/Lions game tonight (he's a Lions fan). After a little negotiation, we planned to meet here around 7 pm, and I'd get home beforehand and order a pizza to arrive around then.

Well, I got out about 10 minutes later than planned, and traffic was worse than usual. Not completely horrific, but definitely even at rush hour it can be better. I wanted to run by the grocery store on the way home, so I did that, and ended up getting home (fighting my way through the seemingly endless supply of really stupid California drivers) around 6:50.

I promptly called the pizza place, and learned that the medium pizza we were ordering cost $14.00, which is amazingly steep, I think. (My experience is that this usually indicates that they have good deals on multiple pizzas, though. Good to remember for next time.) Moreover, it would take 50 minutes to get here.

Subrata hadn't yet shown up, so I put away the groceries, and decided to start a load of laundry. Well, trouble always comes in threes, right? I put my laundry in the washer, put in my liquid soap, and - you guessed it - the coin machine was totally jammed. Gah!

Fortunately, that was the end of the bad fortune. I called my landlord, left a message, and he called back in about ten minutes and said he'd look into it. (Have I mentioned that I've had good landlord karma in my renting life? Dealing with landlords is not my motivation for wanting to own a home.) Meanwhile, I have one pair of clean jeans, and won't be able to do laundry until Saturday. But, I did locate a couple of likely laundromats within a mile of me in case the machine here isn't fixed by then.

The Lions lost the game, unfortunately. I don't really root for any NFL team (except a slight leaning towards the Patriots, but I'm not honestly a "fan", since they're not truly a Boston team), but I'm happy to root for the home team or for whatever team the people watching with me are rooting for. Our pizza arrived 20 minutes early, and was actually quite tasty. And we had a good time chatting and watching the game.

So things mostly worked out. With a little luck, the landlord can fix the washer tomorrow and I can do laundry Saturday in the comfort of my own digs. If not, well, I can at least do three or four loads at once and stock up for the coming week. That's not the worst thing.

Wow, is it December already?
