Gazing into the Abyss: Michael Rawdon's Journal

Something(s) in my Eye

I went to the eye doctor this afternoon; it'd been more than a year, as I recall. And it seems like my vision has deteriorated since then.

The exam was fairly routine: Have me read letters, shine a bunch of bright lights on me, dilate my pupils. The one thing that was different was putting my head in front of a machine where for each eye I went through a series of tests where a light was shone on the wall opposite me inside the machine, and I had to press a button whenever I saw it. It was kind of cool, like a video game. I think it was testing my peripheral vision, or something. Toward the end of the exam I figured out how the machine was working, and also realized that I could see the light source moving out of the corner of my eye, although not well enough to anticipate what it was doing consistently (and, of course, I didn't try, but I found the machine cool enough that my brain was working to deconstruct it despite my best efforts).

Anyway, it turns out that my eyes are a little worse, so I ordered some new contacts and will take my glasses in for new lenses (the glasses are multiple prescriptions old at this point) soon, too.

Pretty painless, all around. Next up: the dentist.

I watched two TV episodes on tape tonight. The third episode of Now and Again or Once and Again or whatever the heck it's called - the one with the dead guy whose brain is transplanted into the body of an artificial human - was okay; the story finally went somewhere. But I decided I don't have much interest in following it further, so I will watch the fourth episode, which I have on tape, and stop there.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit was pretty good, tracking down the murderer of a number of prostitutes. Munch is still annoying being used to crack jokes and generally be a prick, but he does have a few redeeming moments in this one. It was good enough to keep me watching for another week or two.

Did I mention that I discovered that Doctor Who is being shown on the local PBS station? I'm looking forward to watching the episodes I taped on Sunday; it's been years since I've watched the good Doctor!

Did I mention that you should really, really be watching Sports Night? You should, really. Tonight's episode was great.
