Our Best Giants Game Yet

Ceej and I went to see the Braves play the Giants at 3Comdlestick today - and what a game it was!

As I've mentioned before, we play the "what did we see today that we've never seen before?" game. Well today we saw three things we'd never seen before.

FIrst of all, Barry Bonds got his 2000th career hit - a double to left field which keyed a 2-run inning putting the Giants up 3-0. I suspect hardly anyone was tracking this possibility, since everyone seemed a little surprised when the number flashed on the scoreboard. Then, the crowd got up and gave Bonds a long, standing ovation. He tipped his helmet to the crowd twice, smiling yet seeming a little taken aback by it all. I'm always a little mystified by the vehemence with which some fans hate Bonds; yes, he has some bouts with superstar-itis, but by and large he seems to play hard and well, and appreciates his fans.

Second, later in the game the Braves had a man on third base and nobody out. Kirk Reuter - who we kept expecting to self-destruct, but instead pitched eight solid innings - pitched to Chipper Jones, and Jones hit a bullet back to Reuter. Reuter picked it up and ran right at the runner on third, who was caught in a rundown, and was tagged out by catcher Scott Servais. Jones, then, had overrun first base and started heading for second before realizing his mistake and headed to first. Servais had the presence of mind to throw to first where Jones was tagged out. Just your typical 1-5-2-3 double play! Go figure!

Finally, we also got to see Giants center fielder Marvin Benard (a.k.a., "Ceej's favorite Giants player") reach first base on a dropped third strike - ruled a wild pitch.

Reuter outpitched Braves starter Tom Glavine, and Robb Nen started the ninth inning, putting two men on base before striking out the final batter - who was thrown out at first on the dropped third strike. A fine Giants win.

Traffic on the way home was terrible. Ceej and David both seemed rather tired, so we talked for a while, I played a game of Ceej's Playstation baseball game (I lost 2-1), and we had dinner at a good restaurant called Pluto's in downtown Palo Alto. Then I headed home.

My cats have been very bad lately. I think they're just annoyed at the amount of food I give them; they've broken into the cupboard where I keep their food and treats twice this week, eating most of the treats, and trying to rip open their food bag. They also (very bad cats) knocked over and ripped into a container of cookies I had on the cupboard. They didn't eat them - apparently they smelled good in theory but not in practice - but it was very annoying. I scolded them harshly.

The cupboards of nearly every apartment I've seen out here seem not to latch very effectively, and I haven't figured out in this apartment how to keep them from getting at their food. They already have to climb on top of the fridge and lean down from the edge to open the cupboard door and pull things out of the cupboard. It's quite a piece of acrobatics. I haven't figured out a better place to put the food. I must cogitate further. Maybe I need to invest in a large metal container which closes tightly to keep their food in; that's what Tracy has for her cats back in Madison.
