Hitting the Ground - Running or Not
Well, the jury's still out on whether I actually hit the ground running today. Actually, I guess I did okay, I just didn't actually do what I'd planned to set out to do.
The big time sink today was making some changes to our test plan tracking app, and figuring out how to install it on the server where it lives. The changes were actually pretty trivial - what little overhead there was was in understanding the code - but installing on the server was challenging because it wasn't quite correctly configured to handle the changes, and it took quite a bit of running around to get it right. Of course, some of that was just due to my inexperience and wanting to try things out to understand them.
The rest of the afternoon was mainly spent configuring my new G3 at work, which was also fairly challenging, in that I learned some tricky things about Mac OS X Server, including how to get it to recognize my monitor as one that could run at resolutions other than 640x480. But I did get it all up and running, configured to work on the network, and so forth. Having spent more time on that than I'd intended, I then stayed until 7:30 pm to finish the job as much as possible, including rearranging the physical hardware in my cube to the configuration I want. So, I'm just about all set.
Tomorrow, back to testing.
Spent some time tonight playing the game, and am finding that I definitely prefer playing against live opponents. The scenarios just don't do it for me after a while, I think because the opponents tend to be rather passive and it's all up to make to make the first move. I'm stuck on one scenario where you need to bring a device to an enemy base, and the enemy is very heavily armed. Clearly a quick strike is called for and I'm dragging it out far longer than I ought to. I will try again another day.
Oh, and I also received my copy of the Cheops expansion to The Settlers of Catan. It looks pretty good. For ten bucks, how bad can it be?
